Measurements:Height 7 cm / 2.76 inches, Length 10.5 cm / 4.13 inches, Weight 412.1g,2nd Century BCE - 2nd Century CE Han DynastyCondition & Provenance:The jade carving is fully intact without chips, cracks or restored re-polishing. All carved details of the human figure and mythical beast stay crisp and complete. Natural multi-layer burial patinas spread evenly across the whole jade surface, with soft gradient grey, tan and dark mineral staining, free of modern artificial dyeing or acid washing. The base holds original ancient polishing patina, and the suspension hole is original with no later reaming. This artifact comes from a long-established private ancient jade collector based in Manhattan, New York. It was collected by a private East Asian ancient jade gallery in Chicago, Illinois in 2025 and stored in sealed, temperature-controlled dark storage year-round.Object Description:This fully rounded Han Dynasty Hetian jade carving depicts a reclining human figure paired with an auspicious beast, a premium high ancient jade ornament carried and appreciated by elite Han aristocrats. It is carved from a single solid block of Hetian green jade boulder. The human figure lies in a relaxed side resting pose, with soft simplified facial features carved in classic Han minimalist style. One hand rests gently beside the ear, and layered incised lines render wide flowing robe folds that embody the bold, unrefined grand carving aesthetic of the Han period. A mythical auspicious beast curls atop the human’s back, with clearly defined paws and facial details. A piercing suspension hole runs through the beast’s head, made for threading a cord to wear as a personal pendant. The flat smooth base fits comfortably in the palm for handheld appreciation. Multi-layer natural burial mineral patinas blanket every surface, with mottled grey skin and dark ink staining formed over thousands of years underground, plus thick, untouched original antique luster filling every carved crevice. Fully rounded Han jade carvings combining human and beast motifs are extremely scarce; carving a single solid boulder into this complex form required extraordinary ancient craftsmanship. This flawless undamaged piece with untouched natural patina perfectly captures the bold, free-spirited sculptural language of Han jadework. It stands as an irreplaceable physical reference for researching Han jade carving techniques and noble jade-wearing customs, boasting immense archaeological research value, antique collectible worth and decorative display appeal.
