Dimensions:Height 37 cm (14.57 in),Mouth diameter 23 cm (9.06 in),Jin‑Yuan Dynasty,12th‑14th CenturyCondition & Provenance:The jar is structurally intact without penetrating cracks. There are minor age‑related glaze losses and soil patina on partial surface.Painted motifs stay complete with sharp lines.Interior retains original black glaze and wheel‑throwing spiral marks.Base shows authentic excavated body with natural wear and soil erosion. No modern restoration, over‑painting or artificial polishing. This jar comes from a private Hong‑Kong‑based Jin‑Yuan ceramic collection focused on northern Cizhou‑type wares. It was purchased from an antique gallery on Hollywood Road,Hong Kong in 2001 and stored in climate‑controlled storage, now released during collection inventory reorganization.Description:This imposing large jar with black‑painted dragon‑cloud decoration on white slip was produced at Cizhou kiln during Jin‑Yuan period. It is a substantial functional display vessel from northern China. The jar has a robust silhouette with short neck, sloping shoulders and broad belly tapering toward base. The inner rim is fully covered with black glaze. The outer wall features a powerful flying dragon rendered in bold black pigment against white slip. The dragon twists dynamically with finely drawn scales and claws, interspersed among swirling cloud scrolls.Below the main scene, parallel dividing lines frame stylized leaf‑grass ornaments, creating well‑organized layered composition. This piece showcases classic free‑hand brushwork of Cizhou ware. The strokes are bold, fluid and energetic, embodying the unrestrained artistic spirit of northern folk craftsmanship. The coarse‑textured base bears distinct wheel‑cut marks, genuine evidence of medieval northern kiln production. As the dominant folk kiln system in North China,Cizhou rarely produced large‑size jars with dragon themes.Surviving examples of this scale retaining complete dragon painting are quite uncommon.Boasting monumental size, vigorous painting and authentic period characteristics, this jar represents a significant collectible among Cizhou ceramics.
