Dimensions：Height 13.8 cm (5‑7/16 in), Maximum Diameter 10.5 cm (4‑1/8 in), Tang Dynasty (7‑10th Century)Condition & Provenance：This covered jar is structurally intact, no heavy cracks or major chips. The whole glaze surface is covered with dense age‑induced craquelure formed over centuries of burial. Minor faint glaze wear can be spotted around lid rim and jar mouth, consistent with long‑time usage and underground storage. The exposed rough‑textured lower body and base carry genuine earth‑burial patina, mineral deposits and soil encrustations from ancient interment. This wonderful Tang ceramic comes from a respected private early‑art collection based in Chicago, Illinois. The original owner bought this piece from a Hong‑Kong‑based antiquities dealer back in mid‑1970s, kept it within family private holdings ever since, never shown in public exhibitions or offered at auction.Description：This fantastic Tang sancai lidded jar is a terrific representative work of Tang polychrome lead‑glazed pottery. It comes complete with its original matching domed lid topped by a neat round knob. The jar presents a stout, rounded barrel‑shaped silhouette. Its exterior upper section is fully coated in deep cobalt‑blue glaze, overlaid with freely streaked golden‑yellow and forest‑green splash patterns, those colorful streaks flow naturally downwards. Fine incised combed texture decorates beneath the glaze layer, adding extra tactile visual detail. Thick, pervasive craquelure spreads all across lid and jar glaze, that is the iconic aging feature for excavated Tang sancai wares. The lower portion of jar body and entire base are left unglazed, revealing coarse, granular sandy‑orange pottery body with distinct hand‑worked chiseled textures. The inner cavity is plain unglazed terracotta clay. Complete sancai jars retaining their original matching lids are pretty hard to find, lots of surviving examples lost their lids long ago. This piece delivers bold, vibrant color combination and authentic ancient burial traces, perfectly captures the unrestrained artistic vibe of Tang dynasty ceramic craft. It will be a great highlight for any collection focused on early Chinese pottery.
