Dimensions: H. 37 cm (14 1/2 in), 14th Century Condition & Provenance: Condition: The vase is reassembled from broken fragments. Multiple cracks run across mouth‑rim, body and foot‑ring. Some areas of loss are filled with plaster restoration. Painted iconography remains largely legible; original glaze and cobalt painting are preserved. Unglazed sandy base bears original Yuan‑dynasty wheel‑trimming marks with ancient soil patina and kiln‑sand adhesion. This is an important restored specimen preserving full stylistic and technical features, offering substantial academic research value. Provenance: Former collection in Cologne, Germany. Entered local private museum storage in 1968, released for auction in 2026. Description: This large blue‑and‑white meiping was produced at Jingdezhen during the Yuan dynasty. Classic meiping form with small rolled lip, short neck, broad full shoulders and tapering body ending in substantial foot‑ring, representing the monumental silhouette typical of Yuan‑period meiping. Decoration is arranged in horizontal registers. Neck is encircled by fine diaper‑pattern and scrolling‑flower frieze. Shoulder is decorated with four lobed medallion panels enclosing phoenix‑amid‑chrysanthemum motifs. Phoenixes are rendered with outstretched detailed plumage amid blooming flowers, executed with forceful fluid brush‑lines. Medallions are separated by scrolling foliage. Main body is dominated by continuous large‑scale peony‑scroll decoration. Oversized full‑blown peonies interweave with luxuriant branches and leaves in dense confident composition. Lower body carries geometric diaper‑pattern band followed by stylized lotus‑petal register filled with floral and jewel emblems. Decorative zones are divided by cobalt double lines for clear layered visual rhythm. Imported “smalt‑blue” cobalt yields rich saturated blue tones. Iron‑rust speckles appear within heavy pigment accumulations, alongside characteristic Yuan‑dynasty cobalt bleeding. Base is unglazed sandy finish with heavy coarse body clay. Foot‑ring retains rotational trimming tool‑marks from Yuan‑era manufacture, covered by centuries‑old earth patina. Though reconstructed from fragments, this example retains complete iconography, shape, cobalt and body‑glaze technical data. It constitutes a rare physical specimen of Yuan blue‑and‑white with irreplaceable scholarly reference importance.
