Accomplished in poetry, calligraphy and painting, his landscapes drew from Shen Zhou with Zhao Mengfu and Wang Meng influences, characterised by lush, refined elegance. This silk painting depicts a bamboo-grove retreat with thatched cottages among autumn hills, accompanied by a poetic inscription. The recluse theme emerged in the Six Dynasties, with Tao Yuanming laying its spiritual foundation; the bamboo grove alludes to the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.
