This hanging scroll depicts chrysanthemums and orchids arranged as desk offerings: blooms in a basket beside an earthen jar, with a poetic inscription above. The "desk offerings" theme originated in the Song Dynasty, when scholars adorned their studies with flowers, rocks and curios as symbols of moral purity. Chrysanthemums represent the recluse spirit, orchids the "king of fragrance"; together they embody gentlemanly virtue.
