A BLACK STONE FIGURE OF CHAKRASAMVARA, TIBET, 17TH CENTURY OR EARLIER Chakrasamvara and his fierce consort Vajravarahi embracing in alidhasana over prone figures, the four-headed tutelary deity holds various attributes in his twelve radiating arms, the principal hands holding a vajra and ghanta and the uppermost draping a tiger skin over his back, adorned with a garland of severed heads. The consort with her right arm raised, holding a kartika while her left drapes around his neck, her head flung back to look into his face, both within a flaming aureole and above a lotus base. Dimensions: Height 18 cm The vision of Twelve-armed Samvara in an ecstatic, dance-like embrace with his consort Vajravarahi is one of the most exquisite subjects in Vajrayana Buddhist art. Meaning ‘Wheel of Bliss’ in Sanskrit, the union of the two deities is known as Chakrasamvara, as represented in this near-complete example. The deities embody the attainment of the highest yoga tantra tradition and Tibetan Buddhism's supreme ideal: the skilled union of perfect wisdom (Vajravarahi) and compassion (Samvara).
