A LARGE AND INSCRIBED SINO-TIBETAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF KURUKULLA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY Finely cast, the deity standing in a dynamic pratyalidha stance upon the chest of a prostrate figure supported on a circular double-lotus base. Her primary hands hold a bow and arrow, while the secondary hands are lowered in apana mudra. A billowing sash frames the body, and a short loincloth is secured at the waist by a beaded belt. She is richly adorned with jewelry, a beaded festoon, and garlands of flowers and severed heads. The face is modeled with a ferocious expression, dominated by a broad smile beneath the third eye. A skull tiara crowns the head, above which the flaming hair rises dramatically, retaining remnants of red pigment. Inscriptions: To the front of the base in Tibetan, ‘Om mani padme hum’, and to the back of the base with an apocryphal six-character mark, ‘da Ming Xuande nian zhi’. Dimensions: Height 32.7 cm The goddess Kurukulla belongs to a set known as the Three Great Red Deities, which feature Takkiraja from the Guhyasamaja Tantra, and Maharakta Ganapati from the Chakrasamvara Tantra. She is shown dancing atop the supine body of the Hindu god Rahu and draws a bow and arrow symbolizing her power to bewitch the hearts of kings and men through the recitation of her mantras. She is particularly associated with rites of enchantment in Tibetan Buddhism. She is also considered either an emanation of Tara or a transformation of Hevajra.
