拍品描述
A LARGE (67 CM) GILT-COPPER REPOUSSÉ FIGURE OF GARUDA, HIMALAYAN REGION, 18TH-19TH CENTURY Finely worked in repoussé, the zoomorphic figure with its powerful wings outstretched, the body richly gilt and adorned with beaded jewelry and armlets. His fierce avian face is modeled with bulging eyes beneath furrowed brows and a prominent hooked beak, from either side of which issues a writhing serpent grasped firmly in his outstretched hands. The head is framed by a mass of flaming red hair, centered above the forehead by a crescent emblem, while the wings and tail feathers are carefully articulated with deeply incised plumage. The surface retains extensive polychrome decoration in red, blue, and green pigments, emphasizing the crest, wings, serpentine body, and feathering. Old punched apertures along the edges indicate that the figure was originally the centerpiece of a larger architectural ensemble, most likely a Torana. Dimensions: Height 54 cm, Length 67 cm Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie’s, New York, 21 September 2007, lot 157 Price: USD 169,000 or approx. EUR 189,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Expert remark: Compare the related monumental gilt-copper repoussé figure of Garuda, similarly modeled with outstretched wings, elaborate jewelry, and a powerful, highly expressive countenance. The Christie’s example is richly gilt, inset with hardstones, and distinguished by finely worked scroll decoration to the wings. Note also the much earlier date.
