A FINE SILVER FIGURE OF ACALA, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY Kneeling in alidhasana atop a prostrate figure on a beaded double-lotus base, holding a sword in his raised right hand and a noose in his left. Dressed in a tiger pelt, the face of the feline expressively cast over the bent knee, and the deity further adorned with serpents and inlaid jewelry. The face with a wrathful expression, wide bulging eyes below furrowed brows, centered by a third eye, thick scrolling facial hair framing the two rows of the bared teeth, flanked by ears suspending large earrings. The neatly incised hair rising in flame-like locks behind a skull-head tiara, all framed by a separately cast flaming aureole. The base is sealed with a silver plate, neatly chased in relief with a single vajra emblem. The piece is cast in three pieces: the statue, the aureole and the base. (3) Dimensions: Height 10.1 cm Acala (literally, “immovable”) is a wrathful manifestation of Manjushri. He wields a sword to dispatch ignorance and a noose to snare disbelievers. His enflamed wide eyes and a facial grimace exposing teeth express his fearsome aspect. He kneels with one knee on the ground, evoking his role as a protector of the earth.
