AN IMPORTANT AND VERY RARE WOOD STELE OF INDRA AND INDRANI, NEPAL, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Masterfully carved, the divine couple Indra and Indrani seated closely together in lalitasana upon a lotus throne, their bodies gently inclined toward one another in an intimate and harmonious composition. Indra raises his right hand before the chest, while Indrani mirrors him with a similarly poised gesture, both richly adorned with beaded jewelry, elaborate earrings, and tall foliate crowns. Their sensitively modeled faces bear serene expressions, with downcast almond-shaped eyes beneath arched brows and full lips forming subtle smiles. The pair is set within an elaborate arched torana densely carved with scrolling foliage and surmounted by a fierce kirtimukha mask beneath a tiered finial. Two attendant figures stand within architectural niches to either side, each similarly adorned and turned toward the central deities. The lower register is carved with further auspicious imagery, including a caparisoned elephant, recalling Airavata, the celestial mount of Indra. Distinct traces of red and orange pigment remain throughout, contrasting with the deeply patinated surface of the wood.
