拍品描述

A FINE THANGKA DEPICTING JE TSONGKHAPA, FLANKED BY GYALTSAB JE AND KHEDRUP JE, TIBET, 18TH CENTURY Finely painted in distemper and gold on cloth, depicting Je Tsongkhapa seated in dhyanasana upon an elaborate lotus throne, wearing voluminous monastic robes and the characteristic yellow pandita hat, his hands held before the chest in dharmachakra mudra. Flowering lotus stems rise to either shoulder, supporting the sword of wisdom and a sacred scripture. The serene face is framed by a circular halo and further enclosed within an elaborate aureole formed by scrolling foliage and confronting makaras. Tsongkhapa is flanked below by his principal disciples, Gyaltsab Je and Khedrup Je, while numerous Gelug masters and lineage holders are arranged throughout the surrounding landscape. Directly above appears a large Garuda beneath White Manjushri, with further Buddhas, mahasiddhas, and Tibetan teachers emerging from banks of clouds in the upper registers. An offering altar attended by two monks is placed below the central throne, while the lower corners contain further enthroned Buddhist figures with attendants. The densely populated composition is set against a verdant mountainous landscape with pavilions, flowering trees, and cloud formations, all enclosed within a narrow textile border. Dimensions: Image size 65 x 44.5 cm, Size incl. mounting 124 x 71 cm Mounted as a hanging scroll on silk brocade. Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) is the founder of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism, the ‘newest’ of the extant schools. Tsongkhapa studied the traditions of the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyü, and particularly Kadam lineages, and codified certain principles of all of them in the Gelug tradition. Today, the order is the most popularly followed in Tibet, with its head, the Dalai Lama, seen as the spiritual leader of the country. The Gelug tradition is also known as the ‘Yellow Hat Sect’, for the color of their pointed caps, and Tsongkhapa can often be identified by the hat as well as the sword and manuscript which sit in lotus blossoms at his shoulders.
