A RICHLY GILT BRONZE AND CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL VASE, FANGHU, FIVE-CHARACTER QIANLONG MARK AND PERIOD China, 1736-1795. Of squared baluster form with a waisted neck flanked by neatly modeled and gilt phoenix-form handles, the foot and mouth lined by a band of key-fret. Decorated in vibrant enamels on a deep turquoise ground, the sides with a band of stiff leaves above lappets, a narrow border of kui-long around the shoulders, and further stiff leaves enclosing the neck. The base is meticulously incised with a five-character mark Qianlong nianzhi ren and of the period. Dimensions: Height 30.2 cm These types of cloisonné enamel vases bearing an additional character below the reign mark, together with matching censers and incense-tool vessels (luping sanshi), were produced for the Qianlong court as components of formal incense sets, intended for the ritual burning of incense and the preparation and display of the accompanying implements. Some scholars have suggested that the fifth character under the Qianlong mark could have been a way to number the large group of objects in the correct order, see Helmut Brinker and Albert Lutz, Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, New York, 1989, pp. 74-79. Literature comparison: Compare a related cloisonné ‘animal mask’ vase, dated Qianlong period, 22.1 cm tall, in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, reference number 故琺000727N000000000.
