A FINE GILT AND POLYCHROME-DECORATED WOOD FIGURE OF GUANYIN, YUAN TO MING DYNASTY Expert’s note The softly modeled, feminine features and dignified bearing of this Guanyin reflect the sculptural idiom of the Yuan and early Ming periods, combining a commanding presence with an expression of quiet compassion. Particularly distinctive is the treatment of the robes, which sweep across the crossed legs and cascade over the lotus base in deeply carved, rhythmic folds. Their broad, curving contours echo the petals beneath, uniting figure and pedestal in a composition of remarkable poise. China, 1279-1644. Finely carved, seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base, the right hand resting on the thigh and the left raised before the chest in abhaya mudra. The voluminous robes open at the chest to reveal an elaborate beaded necklace, falling from the shoulders in sweeping folds that gather around the crossed legs and cascade over the base. The serene face has heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, a slender nose, and bow-shaped lips, framed by elongated earlobes. Two long braids fall over the shoulders beneath an ornate foliate tiara centered by a seated figure of Amitabha.
