A GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA, MING DYNASTY, LATE 16TH CENTURY Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 1 November 2021, based on sample number C121n2, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 300 and 450 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot. Expert’s note: The present figure is a distinguished example of the Chinese Buddhist sculptural tradition of the Ming dynasty, ultimately rooted in the celebrated artistic vocabulary established under the Yongle and Xuande emperors and subsequently transformed by Chinese workshops over the course of the dynasty. Stylistically, the sculpture may be placed in the late 16th century, most plausibly around the early Wanli period. This dating is independently supported by thermoluminescence analysis of the casting core, which yielded an age of approximately 300–450 years and is therefore fully consistent with a late Ming attribution. Of particular significance is the remarkable devotional wear preserved on the figure. The gilt-lacquered surface of the face has been extensively worn through worship within the culture, lending the sculpture an unusually immediate and deeply personal character. China, Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus throne, the left hand raised before the chest and the right resting on the corresponding knee, both held in vitarka mudra. Dressed in a long dhoti and billowing scarf, richly adorned with beaded floral jewelry. The serene face modeled with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, incised arched brows, a raised urna, and bow-shaped lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes suspending elaborate earrings. The hair is gathered into a high chignon behind a five-paneled foliate tiara.
