† A PALE CELADON JADE ‘HARE’ PENDANT, WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY China, ca. 1050-771 BC. The flattened pendant carved identically to both sides as a crouching hare in profile, the head with a rounded muzzle and pointed ears above the circular eyes. The body sweeping in a curve to a curled tail, the toes indicated by small incisions, and a small aperture drilled from both sides to the rump. The translucent stone is of a pale celadon color, darkening towards the tail and with a fine soft polish overall. Dimensions: Length 4.6 cm With a padded storage box. (2) Small hare-shaped pendants like the present lot belong to the main types of jade animal carvings from the Shang and Western Zhou dynasties. In the Western Zhou period, such zoomorphic jades formed part of elaborate personal ornaments and ceremonial assemblages, serving as emblems of status and possibly carrying protective or ritual significance. The animal’s compact body and distinctive elongated ears lent themselves particularly well to the highly stylized vocabulary of early jade carving. The hare also acquired important symbolic associations in early imperial China. Closely connected with the moon and, ultimately, with ideas of longevity and immortality, the animal became an enduring element of Chinese visual culture.
