A LARGE AND WELL-PRESERVED GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA, 18TH CENTURY Expert’s note Coating carved wood figures with gilt-lacquer is a technique that appears to have emerged during the early part of the Ming dynasty, continuing on to the Qing dynasty and echoing Buddhist bronze figures in form and decoration. The present lot boasts a superbly preserved lacquer coating that is more than 250 years old, and hence shows a beautiful, naturally grown patina. Furthermore, the statue is of relatively large size and overall in a markedly good state of preservation, making it a fine example of Buddhist gilt-lacquer sculpture from this period. China. Carved standing, the right hand raised in karana mudra and the left lowered in varada mudra, wearing a long dhoti falling in crisp vertical pleats and a voluminous mantle cascading from the shoulders in deeply carved, rhythmically undulating folds, the hems billowing dramatically around the body, the chest adorned with elaborate necklaces. The serene face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes, elegantly arched black-painted brows, and full lips forming a subtle smile picked out in red, flanked by long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in a high topknot. The reverse with a sealed rectangular prayer pocket, likely still retaining its sacred contents. Dimensions: Height 45.5 cm (incl. stand), 44.6 cm (excl. stand) With an associated carved and lacquered wood stand.
