† A GRAY AND BROWN JADE ‘KNEELING FIGURE’ PENDANT, EASTERN ZHOU DYNASTY China, 771-256 BC. Finely carved in the round as a seated figure with hands clasped below the large belly, the feet turned to either side, the ovoid head incised with almond-shaped eyes below arched eyebrows, and neatly parted hair under the cap. The body is covered in hatched and triangular patterns and a large circle to the abdomen representing the navel. The neck drilled to the back with a vertical perforation for suspension. The semi-translucent stone is of a pale gray hue with few dark brown areas and faint veins. The servile posture, lack of clothing, and patterns of the figure suggest that this might be a non-Han ethnic type, perhaps a captured barbarian slave. Dimensions: Height 5.1 cm With an associated padded storage box.
