拍品描述
A FINE GILT-BRONZE BEAR-FORM SUPPORT, HAN DYNASTY China, 206 BC–220 AD. Powerfully cast as a crouching bear, the compact body seated upright on its haunches, with both forepaws drawn up and resting firmly upon the knees. The large head is thrust forward between raised shoulders, vigorously modeled with a broad muzzle, prominent rounded eyes beneath heavy brows, and tall pointed ears. The powerful limbs and deeply delineated facial features lend the animal a remarkably animated and alert expression. The hollow reverse is left open and fitted with a horizontal projecting tang behind the head for attachment. The surface with extensive remains of rich gilding. Expert’s note: The present bear was originally conceived as a support for a larger bronze vessel or furnishing, such supports typically being employed in sets of three. Large ancient bronzes were frequently recovered in fragmentary or severely corroded condition, while their more solidly cast fittings survived intact. Where restoration of the original vessel was no longer feasible, these separately cast elements were often detached and subsequently preserved or dispersed individually. Dimensions: Height 4.8 cm (excl. stand), 5.8 cm (incl. stand) With a fitted wood stand, dating from circa the second half of the 20th century.
