A SILVER ‘FLOWERS AND BIRDS’ COSMETICS BOX AND COVER, TANG DYNASTY Expert’s note Small silver boxes of this type were used during the Tang dynasty to hold cosmetics and aromatic substances, particularly rouge and scented balms. Their diminutive size reflects the precious nature of their contents: highly refined cosmetics, perfumes, and aromatic preparations were luxury commodities intended to be used sparingly by members of the elite. Significantly, historical records relate that finely made gold and silver boxes containing such preparations were presented as imperial gifts during the Lari winter festival. The Lari festival was an important occasion for gift-giving at the Tang court, when the emperor bestowed valuable seasonal preparations, including lip balms and facial ointments, upon favored officials. Contemporary accounts record these being presented in costly silver vessels, exactly such as the present lot, underscoring the considerable status associated with both container and contents. China, 618-907. The small, slightly convex box and cover of circular shape, finely chased against a minutely ring-punched ground. The top and underside both finely incised with scrolling vines and four birds. The sides are encircled with bands of foliate scrolls on a stippled ground.
