拍品描述

A BRONZE ‘AVALOKITESHVARA’ BOTTLE VASE, NORTHERN QI TO EARLY TANG DYNASTY China, circa 6th-7th century. Neatly cast with an ovoid body supported on a gently spreading foot and rising to a tall waisted ‘Bamboo’ neck, encircled by a series of horizontal ribs and terminating in a wide flaring mouth with an everted rim. Dimensions: Height 13.5 cm The form of the present vase derives from Indian ritual vessels used to sprinkle water and pour libations during religious ceremonies. Such vessels entered China together with Buddhism and became closely associated with bodhisattva imagery, especially Avalokiteshvara, known in China as Guanyin. For this reason, one Chinese name for vessels of this type is Guanyin ping, or “Avalokiteshvara vase.” The ribbed ‘Bamboo’ neck is especially rare and appears on a small number of Sui-dynasty examples (see auction result comparison), before the feature was later translated into pottery and ceramic. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze bottle vase, dated to Northern Qi dynasty, 550-577, 15.6 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2002.290. Compare a closely related bronze bottle vase, dated to Tang dynasty, 19.4 cm high, in the Tokyo National Museum, object number TE-956.
