A GRAY AND WHITE JADE GROUP OF A BIXIE AND YOUNG, SONG TO MING DYNASTY China, circa 12th to 15th century. Dexterously carved, the two-horned winged beast strides alongside its young offspring, their furcated tails intertwined. Both figures hold their heads majestically aloft and turn towards one another, each with bulging eyes and a prominent snout with gaping jaws revealing sharp fangs and tongue. The finely polished, translucent stone is of a white and dark gray tone, the shadings skillfully utilized by the lapidary. Dimensions: Length 7.5 cm The carver of this piece has successfully conveyed a sense of movement and liveliness in the depiction of the mythical creature and its cub as they prowl forward together, their heads turned back towards one another. Carvings depicting animals with their young gained popularity during the Yuan and Ming dynasties and continued to be produced throughout the Qing period.
