拍品描述
A SUPERB WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ‘LINGBI’ SCHOLAR’S ROCK, 18TH CENTURY China. The large stone exquisitely carved and pierced to emulate the natural aesthetics of a Lingbi stone, with sculpted branches appearing to grow downward and deep hollowed sections suggestive of erosion from rainfall. The masterfully polished, translucent stone is of a white color with pale russet shading and veins. Dimensions: Height 17.8 cm (excl. stand), 20.3 cm (incl. stand) With a carved wood stand dating from the late Qing dynasty. (2) As far back as the Song Dynasty, naturally weathered rocks were collected and displayed for pleasure and by the 17th century individual rocks were important and respected enough to have portraits commissioned. Exceptional examples possess good shape, texture and color, and have resonance when struck. Given these qualities a viewer can admire the strength of outline, perhaps seeing a mountain ridge or a rising cloud within the amorphous mass, and delight in following the twisting, undulating surface texture with their eyes. In the following years, artisans also produced facsimiles of naturally occurring rocks in various materials, including jade, glass, and ceramic.
