A VERY RARE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE CENSER, CHINA, 17TH CENTURY The deep cylindrical body with gently rounded sides supported on a broad circular foot, the exterior is finely worked with a dense ring-punched ground and applied in parcel-gilt relief with four lively dragons, each depicted in profile with open jaws, raised limbs, and a sinuous body dissolving into flame-like scrolls. The dragons are framed by two gilt bands incised with scrolling and whorl motifs, while the lower body is further applied with evenly spaced scrolling-cloud medallions. The sides are flanked by a massive pair of gilt mythical beast-mask handles suspending loose rings. The base with an apocryphal six-character Xuande mark da Ming Xuande nianzhi mark. Dimensions: Length 15.5 cm Expert’s note: The present censer is made in the manner of Hu Wenming (active 1573-1620), one of the most renowned metalworkers in Chinese history and among the few whose name and individual style are discussed in Chinese art-historical writings. A native of Yunjian, Hu became celebrated for scholarly objects such as incense burners and brush pots, characterized by densely ring-punched grounds supporting naturalistic or archaistic motifs cast in high relief and frequently enriched with parcel gilding. These features are all found in the present lot, particularly in its gilt relief decoration, the meticulously punched ground, and the chocolate-brown patina.
