拍品描述

† A FINELY CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER ‘LOTUS’ DISH, EARLY MING DYNASTY, 1400-1450 China. The shallow dish supported on a circular foot and with curved sides, intricately carved to the interior with dense lotus scroll issuing a central blossom enclosed by six further blooms, each with different petals, framed by a thick rim. The exterior similarly carved with lotus and the underside covered in a lustrous black lacquer. Dimensions: Diameter 28.5 cm With a padded storage box. (2) The century from the beginning of the Yuan to the early Ming dynasty witnessed the evolution of the art of carved lacquer ware in south China from a decorative craft to a branch of imperially produced artefacts of the highest order, in parallel to a similar development of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. The escalation of skills at the respective workshops allowed the Yongle Emperor to exploit both porcelain and lacquer ware as a means of diplomatic exchange. Lacquer ware of this period is, however, infinitely rarer than the porcelain, because its laborious manufacturing process does not lend itself to series production, but is dependent on the ability of individual craftsmen.
