AN IMPERIAL THREE-COLOR LACQUER ZHADOU AND COVER, QIANLONG PERIOD China, 1736-1795. Richly carved through the red and dark green layers to the ochre ground, the wide everted eight-lobed rim carved on top with lotus flowers, interlocking ruyi and foliage bands lined by a key-fret border, the sides neatly incised with hexagonal floral diaper, and the underside of the rim rendered with eight archaistic reserves formed by kuilong. The en suite domed cover is carved around a circle of petal lappets at the base of the bud-form finial with bats alternating with lotus above a band of kuilong. The interior and base are entirely covered in black lacquer. Dimensions: Length 14.8 cm Expert’s note: The Sanxitang (Three Treasures Hall) was a private study of the Qianlong Emperor. It was so named because it was used to house his favorite three pieces of calligraphy, “Timely Clearing after Snowfall” by Wang Xizhi, “Mid-Autumn” by Wang Xianzhi, and “A Letter to Boyuan” by Wang Xun. The hall also houses a closely related zhadou along with a number of other important scholar’s objects made during the period. Literature comparison: Compare a related three color lacquer lobed zhadou, predominantly of cinnabar with subtle use of black lacquer and an ochre ground, dated Qing dynasty, 14.5 cm wide, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, reference number 故漆000537N000000000. Compare a related red lacquer zhadou, dated to the 18th century, in the Shenyang Palace Museum, illustrated in Robert L. Thorp, Son of Heaven, Imperial Arts of China, Seattle, 1988, p. 96, no. 28.
