Ɏ A HUANGHUALI MODULAR PEDESTAL DESK, JIAJI'AN, 19TH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY Expert’s note The jiaji’an belongs to the tradition of demountable or modular Chinese furniture. Despite its imposing appearance when assembled, the present desk is essentially a simple three-part system. The long tabletop is neither hinged nor permanently fixed to its supports, but simply rests across two independent drawer pedestals. This ingenious construction allowed the desk to be readily dismantled, moved, and reassembled, while the two pedestals provided convenient storage and could also be used independently. Such versatility was particularly well suited to the flexible organization of traditional Chinese interiors, where furniture was frequently moved and rearranged according to occasion and need. China. The rectangular floating panel with gently rounded edges rests on two separate corner-leg pedestals, each fitted with two drawers set with simple brass bail handles, all raised on square-section legs joined by fretwork stretchers.
