拍品描述

Ɏ A HUANGHUALI STATIONERY BOX AND COVER, LATE MING TO EARLY QING DYNASTY Expert’s note The sophisticated construction follows traditional Chinese woodworking techniques, with the side panels secured by precisely fitted interlocking joints, while the cover incorporates a floating panel within a solid frame to accommodate the natural movement of the wood. China, 17th-18th century. Of rectangular form, the box and cover edged in flat beading where they meet, the richly grained wood of a deep lustrous golden-brown color with subtle darker streaks and flowing grain patterns. Dimensions: Size 8.5 x 14 x 25 cm Small, undecorated boxes made from precious hardwoods like the present lot were widely appreciated for their simplicity during the Ming and Qing dynasties. They served well on the scholar’s desk or any part of the household, where small items were stored. This box is a fine example in its reliance on well-figured wood grain for visual effect. Its beaded edges (qibianxian) not only serve as decoration but also have the practical function of increasing the surface area where the rims meet, thus making the box more durable.
