A BAMBOO ‘LADY VIEWING A SCROLL’ BRUSHPOT, BITONG, BY ZHANG BUQING, 18TH CENTURY China. Of tall, gently waisted form, raised on three short feet, skillfully carved in graduated relief with an elegant lady seated upon a low stool, her head inclined as she studies an unfurled handscroll held across her lap. Her hair is gathered into a high chignon and her voluminous robes cascade in long, sweeping folds. The finely polished surface and pronounced vertical grain of the bamboo provide a painterly carving. Dimensions: Height 14 cm Zhang Buqing was a native of Jiading during the reigns of the Qianlong and Jiaqing Emperors. An autodidact, Zhang is particularly well known for his carvings of fruiting branches; his style is said to resemble that of Deng Yongji. Due to his reclusive lifestyle, little is known of Zhang’s oeuvre and his skills remained largely unknown during his lifetime.
