A MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID GOLD AND BLACK LACQUER CHESS AND BACKGAMMON BOARD, CANTON, 19TH CENTURY China, Guangdong province. Finely crafted, square in form, with lobed corners, divided into two sections joined by a pair of hinges, allowing it to be folded and converted into a box. The exterior is decorated with a chessboard, the white squares inlaid with large tiles of mother-of-pearl and the black squares lacquered in gilt with figural scenes set among foliage, all framed by panels containing further related scenes, interspersed with auspicious motifs against a dotted ground. The reverse is decorated with a backgammon board, similarly embellished with gilt accents and vegetal ornament. Dimensions: Length 49.5 cm, Width 49.2 cm Although commercial relations between China and Britain remained relatively stable at the beginning of the nineteenth century, they became increasingly strained, culminating in the Opium Wars of 1839-1842 and 1856-1860. The subsequent expansion of Western access to Chinese ports and markets brought Chinese luxury goods into wider circulation among European collectors. Among the export works particularly valued in the West were intricately carved ivory chess sets and richly lacquered chessboards such as the present lot, which exemplifies the refinement of Chinese craftsmanship adapted to contemporary Western taste. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related gold and black lacquer game board with ivory game pieces, dated to the 19th century, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.80.80.1-.68.
