Dimensions: Diameter 20 cm With an associated Japanese wood storage box. (2) Tixi lacquer (tihsi) is one of the most refined techniques in the long tradition of Chinese carved lacquer. Developed to a high level during the Song and Yuan dynasties, the technique was created by applying numerous layers of alternating colored lacquer, most commonly red and black, and then carving through the accumulated layers to reveal rhythmic patterns of contrasting colors. The characteristic “incised rhinoceros” effect derives from the sharp, flowing lines that expose the different lacquer strata beneath the surface.
