† A CHARMING CINNABAR LACQUER ‘LAUGHING BUDDHA’ BOX AND COVER, 16TH CENTURY OR EARLIER Expert’s note Recent research into the dating of carved lacquer has put forward the suggestion that boxes of this type with double key-fret decoration on the rim and relatively large figures on the cover can be dated as early as the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). The strongest argument in favor of this early dating is the relatively recent discovery of a similar, somewhat larger box in a group of tombs near Shanghai that belonged to the Ren family, of which the latest was datable to 1351 and the earliest to 1338. China. The circular box and cover meticulously carved with a three dimensional design, the bottom layer features incredibly fine incised water patterns, the middle layer with a ground rendered in brocade patterns, and the top layer depicts the Laughing Buddha (Budai), dressed in a wide robe with sleeves, bare-chested and belly exposed, carrying a staff on his shoulder that suspends a bundle, smiling broadly, his expression lifelike and captivating, and flanked by a pine with a lozenge pattern. The sides of the box and cover are carved with key-fret and the interior and base lacquered in black. Dimensions: Diameter 7.8 cm With an associated Japanese storage box.
