A JUNYAO PURPLE-SPLASHED DISH, SONG-YUAN DYNASTY, EX TSUI MUSEUM Expert’s note: On the present dish, a distinct patch of malachite green punctuates the lavender splash like the pupil of an eye. This rare and striking effect has been attributed to a high concentration of copper oxide; see Rosemary Scott, Imperial Taste: Chinese Ceramics from the Percival David Foundation, London, 1989, p. 39. China, 12th-13th century. Well potted with shallow rounded sides supported on a short foot and rising to a broad everted rim, covered overall in a thick glaze of rich turquoise blue color thinning to mushroom at the rim, the interior decorated to with a single reddish-purple splash, the glaze stopping irregularly above the foot. Dimensions: Diameter 10.5 cm The shallow and sturdy form of this dish, with a wide everted rim, represents a classic shape of Jun ware produced at kilns in Henan province. One of the 'Five Classic Wares' of the Song dynasty, these wares are known for their ravishing blue glazes, which were not achieved from pigment but from an optical illusion where minute spherules of glass in the glaze scattered blue light. Unlike the other classic wares of the Song dynasty, the porous and thick body of Jun ware was best suited for simple forms, such as this charming dish. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Jun purple-splashed blue-glazed dish, dated to Northern Song-Jin dynasty, 12th century, 11.7 cm diameter, in the Worcester Art Museum, object number 2008.47.
