拍品描述
† A SMALL SMOKY CRYSTAL ‘CONCH’ WATER DROPPER, 18TH CENTURY China. Finely carved and well hollowed as a large conch shell, supported on three smaller shell-form feet, with a fourth tiny conch nestled beside the circular aperture. A second opening is carved at the tip, while the natural mouth of the conch is finely incised with concentric lines suggesting the soft body of the mollusk. The translucent rock crystal is of a fine pale smoky tone with few icy inclusions. Dimensions: Length 5.7 cm With a padded storage box. (2) The conch shell is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols in Buddhism and considered sacred in China and Tibet. Folk tradition also holds that the conch shell symbolizes numerous children and grandchildren, representing prosperity and a thriving family. Highly regarded as a natural mineral with the 'brilliance of water' and as being 'a beautiful material imported from Persia', rock crystal was associated with 'simple beauty' by the scholarly elites, who fashioned many objects from this material to decorate their studios.
