A FINE AND RARE BLUE AND WHITE GARLIC-HEAD VASE, KANGXI PERIOD Expert’s note: This splendid vase is distinguished by the rarity and elegance of its form. The decoration is executed in a refined, classical manner, with subtle tonal gradations and elements characteristic of the celebrated “Master of the Rocks” style, particularly evident in the treatment of the figures’ robes and the billowing drapery. These richly painted passages contrast beautifully with the swirling clouds and freely arranged floral sprays above, together making the vase a quintessential example of Kangxi blue-and-white porcelain. China, 1662-1722. Well potted with a globular body supported on a spreading foot and surmounted by a slender waisted neck and garlic mouth. Finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with a scholar-official surrounded by two ladies, one kneeling before him, and three attendants, one wielding a large fan. The reverse similarly painted with a fenced garden with rockwork and a plantain tree, all below swirling clouds. The upper neck with delicately painted willow and prunus, the mouth encircled by chrysanthemums and magnolias borne on thin leafy stems. Dimensions: Height 27.6 cm The recessed base with an apocryphal underglaze-blue six-character mark da Ming Chenghua nianzhi.
