A FAMILLE VERTE ‘LADY AND BOY’ DISH, KANGXI PERIOD Expert’s note: Many of the finest Kangxi-period famille verte dishes, including the present lot, are distinguished by their strikingly unconventional figural proportions, with elegant ladies shown on a markedly larger scale than the boys accompanying them. Here, the diminutive boy serves as a deliberate pictorial device, accommodating the curvature of the dish and balancing the commanding figure of the lady within its concave surface. Equally remarkable is the extensive use of lustrous black enamel. While such deep black is frequently employed for the elaborate coiffures of female figures, its application across the lady’s robe is exceptionally rare. The dark ground, enlivened by brilliantly colored floral medallions, lends the figure extraordinary visual presence and gives the composition much of its distinctive refinement and dramatic force. China, 1662-1722. Boldly painted in bright enamels of green, yellow, aubergine, black, and blue with iron-red and gilt, with an elegant lady seated on rockwork with one leg crossed over the other and gently bending towards the child, her robes defined by a bold pattern of lobed cartouches enclosing blossoms above a black ground. The happy boy playfully holding foliage in his left hand while dancing. The idyllic scene backed by a fence and colorful blossoms. The dish with shallow rounded sides raised on a channel foot.
