A LARGE GLAZED BISCUIT FIGURE OF AMITAYUS, QING DYNASTY Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 4 August 2026, based on sample number P126j94, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 150 and 230 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot. Expert's note: The present figure is an excellent example of the large-scale Buddhist biscuit porcelains produced at Jingdezhen during the Kangxi period. Their origins can be traced to the earlier fahua tradition, first developed in northern China during the Yuan dynasty and subsequently adopted at Jingdezhen during the Ming dynasty. Fahua wares, distinguished by their vibrant turquoise and green lead glazes, were primarily employed for large religious sculptures and temple furnishings. The present figure, however, represents a later and technically far more advanced stage of this tradition. Rather than being executed in low-fired fahua earthenware, it is modeled in high-fired biscuit porcelain, a medium that permitted a level of sculptural refinement unattainable in earlier fahua production. The crisp rendering of the facial features, the deeply undercut drapery, and the finely articulated jewelry demonstrate the remarkable advances in modeling achieved at Jingdezhen during the mid- to late seventeenth century. While retaining the deep turquoise glaze inherited from the earlier fahua aesthetic, Kangxi potters expanded the decorative palette by introducing elegant lemon-yellow glazes together with the distinctive aubergine enamels that became characteristic of the finest biscuit sculptures of the period. The present figure exemplifies this successful fusion of the monumental color traditions of fahua with the technical sophistication and artistic refinement of Kangxi porcelain. China, 1790-1870. Well modeled and richly glazed in pale yellow, turquoise, and aubergine, the deity standing in samabhanga and holding a small offering bowl in his right hand, the left hanging pendent at his side, wearing loosely draped robes falling in graceful folds, the chest and arms adorned with fine beaded jewelry. His face with a serene expression marked by heavy-lidded eyes and full lips forming a subtle smile, flanked by elongated pendulous earlobes. The hair pulled up into a high chignon behind the elaborate foliate five-panel crown. The base with a circular aperture.
