A RARE LONGQUAN CELADON ‘FOUR BOYS AND A LION’ CENSER AND COVER, MING DYNASTY China, 15th-16th century. Finely potted, the square censer is decorated on the sides with floral sprigs and is supported on the shoulders of four kneeling human figures, raised on an integral openwork base. The cover is surmounted by a Buddhist lion seated with its left paw resting on a beribboned brocade ball. The whole is covered in a glaze of sea-green color, save for the unglazed foot rim burnt to orange in the firing. (2) Dimensions: Height 16.4 cm The lustrous sea-green glaze is characteristic of Ming-dynasty Longquan celadon. The rare square form of the present censer represents the earth, while the lingzhi fungi symbolize longevity. The image of four boys (si hai) raising a vase (sheng ping) forms a homophonous rebus for the auspicious phrase ‘sihai shengping’, meaning ‘peace throughout the world’.
