A SUPERB CELADON AND RUSSET JADE CARVING OF A MONKEY ON A HORSE, LATE MING TO EARLY QING DYNASTY China, 17th – 18th century. Exquisitely carved, the equine depicted recumbent in a playful pose, its torso dynamically twisted with the forelegs tucked beneath the body and the hind legs raised gracefully to one side, between which the long, bushy tail curves elegantly. Its powerful neck, adorned with a luxuriant mane, twists to turn the powerfully modeled head backwards in an engaging exchange with the diminutive monkey perched upon its haunches. The superbly polished, translucent stone is of an attractive pale celadon tone, enlivened by areas of russet mottling concentrated along the lower section of the carving. Dimensions: Length 11.5 cm The present lot is filled with auspicious symbolism. The depiction of a monkey atop a horse forms the rebus ‘mashang fenghou’, conveying the wish for the immediate conferment of the rank of marquis or a speedy appointment to high office. Such a carving would have been an auspicious gift to an aspiring official.
