A MOUNTAIN-SHAPED ‘CRANE, PINE AND LINGZHI’ JADE BRUSH REST, 18TH-19TH CENTURY China. Skillfully carved, the crane is depicted with meticulously rendered plumage and a long, slender beak, standing gracefully at the foot of a towering rocky outcrop from which emerge evergreen pines, their elegantly sweeping branches exquisitely executed in openwork, together with sprigs of lingzhi fungus. The translucent stone is of a grayish-white tone with cloudy inclusions and dark specks. Dimensions: Width 13.2 cm Cranes, pines, and lingzhi are enduring symbols of longevity and transcendence in Chinese mythology and traditional visual culture. Cranes, admired for their grace and reputedly long lifespan, were believed to serve as the celestial mounts of Daoist immortals, embodying wisdom, purity, and the ascent to the heavenly realm. Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), a rare medicinal fungus revered since antiquity, was associated with vitality, spiritual cultivation, and the quest for immortality in Daoist tradition. The evergreen pine, which remains verdant throughout the changing seasons, symbolizes steadfastness, endurance, and the ability to withstand adversity, making it a powerful emblem of longevity and moral integrity. Together, they collectively convey wishes for long life, good health, and enduring harmony between the human and the divine.
