A BLACK STONE FIGURE OF A YAKSHI, NORTHERN INDIA, CIRCA 12TH-13TH CENTURY Finely carved standing barefoot with legs crossed on a double-lotus base, the hands raised above her head with fingers intertwined, wearing a pleated skirt incised with foliate motifs falling in voluminous folds to the base, the simple blouse with beaded hems, and adorned with jewelry. The face with a serene expression marked by heavy-lidded downcast eyes under arched brows, a slender nose, and pursed lips forming a gentle smile, flanked by ears suspending large foliate earrings. The hair tied away from the face in a braid falling down the back and crowned by a stylized flaring headdress in the form of a fanned peacock train. Dimensions: Height 54 cm A yakshi is a female earth spirit, accepted as a symbol of fertility by Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain faiths. She is usually portrayed as a wide- hipped, voluptuous woman, who can cause a tree to bear fruit simply by touching it with her foot. The prominence of the peacock, enemy of serpents, on the back of her headdress suggests that the present yakshi has the power to protect against snakebite. Sculptures of yakshi are often seen in elaborate architectural motifs on the façades of temples and stupas. Earliest examples of Yakshi figures can be traced back to narrative reliefs of Sanchi and Bharhut Stupa. See the yakshi at the Bharhut stupa, Madhya Pradesh, dated circa first century BC; and a figure of a yakshi with a peacock headdress in mottled red sandstone, Mathura, dated c. 75 AD, 127.6 cm high, in the Cleveland Museum of Art, accession number 1968.104.
