A SANCAI GLAZED BUDDHIST ALMS BOWL, PATRA, TANG DYNASTY Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 7 August 2026, based on sample number C126j62, sets the firing date of the sample taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot. China, 618-907. The pottery well modeled, the compressed globular body supported on a rounded base and rising to a gently incurved rim. Finely splashed with green, amber, and straw-colored glazes, interspersed with resist-decorated spots. The glaze stops irregularly in distinctive drops well above the foot, revealing the buff-colored ware beneath. Dimensions: Diameter 17 cm Begging bowls, or alms bowls, are distinguished from ordinary bowls as they have rounded bottoms and interned mouths, like the present lot. The alms bowl is perhaps the most important object for daily use by a Buddhist monk. It is used as a vessel in which to collect alms (either money or food) from lay supporters. During the Tang dynasty, gold, silver, glass, and pottery vessels imported from Europe and elsewhere in Asia inspired new ceramic forms, including the alms bowl derived from early Indian examples.
