A MOLDED YAOZHOU CELADON ‘CHRYSANTHEMUM’ BOWL, NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY China, 960-1127. Of conical form with an everted rim, the interior crisply molded with three stylized flowers in full bloom borne on a meandering vine with further flower buds and dense scrolling leaves, all encircling a central chrysanthemum bloom with radiating petals, covered overall in a finely crackled olive-green glaze attractively darkening in the recesses. Dimensions: Diameter 10.5 cm The Yaozhou kilns, located at Huangpuzhen, Tongchuanxian, Shaanxi province, began production of a wide range of wares during the Tang dynasty. The kilns were well placed to use water transportation to the Northern Song capital at Kaifeng, and it is recorded that Yaozhou wares were presented as tribute to the Northern Song court. Both the official Song history and other literary sources mention such tribute gifts. For instance, the official gazetteer during the Yuanfeng era (1078-1085) mentions fifty sets of tribute ceramics sent to the court from Yaozhou.
