拍品描述
A RARE PERSIMMON-GLAZED JAR, NORTHERN SONG-JIN DYNASTY China, 11th-12th century. Finely potted with a compressed globular body supported on a short foot and rising to a broad neck flanked by a pair of strap handles. Covered overall in a rich persimmon-colored glaze of warm reddish-brown tone, the surface with subtle darker variations in color. The glaze terminates naturally and irregularly around the lower quarter of the vessel, forming several pronounced and attractively rounded drips, and revealing the pale buff ware below. Dimensions: Width 11.4 cm Persimmon glazes were made at several northern Chinese kilns during the Song and early Jin periods, including the Ding and Yaozhou kilns, and seem to have been especially admired on vases and vessel forms associated with the tea ceremony. Although the Yaozhou kilns are most commonly associated with celadon-glazed wares as well as black and white wares, a small number of fine persimmon-glazed Yaozhou ceramics have been preserved. Literature comparison: Compare a related Ding-type russet glazed jar, 9.8 cm diameter, dated 2nd half of the 11th century-1st half of the 12th century, in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession number EA1956.1396.
