A MOLDED DINGYAO ‘PEONIES’ DISH, JIN DYNASTY China, 1115-1234. The shallow dish with a scalloped rim above radiating petals on the sides, crisply molded at the center with peony blossoms amid other auspicious flowers, and covered overall in an even pale ivory glaze suffused with fine crackles. Dimensions: Diameter 13.9 cm By the late Northern Song period, Dingyao craftsmen utilized molds to neatly produce the vessel shapes while simultaneously impressing the decoration. The use of such molds achieved greater production efficiency which allowed craftsmen to meet increasing market demand. The molds used were meticulously crafted and similar to those used to cast decoration on gold and silver works of art. Typically, Dingyao molded decoration included chrysanthemum or peonies, such as seen on the present lot, flying birds like ducks or cranes, composite leafy floral motifs, dragons and fishes.
