A RARE AND BOLDLY PAINTED CIZHOU ‘FLORAL’ JAR, JIN-YUAN DYNASTY Expert’s note The present jar belongs to a closely related group of Cizhou-type vessels produced during the late Jin to Yuan period. Two particularly compelling comparisons sold at Christie’s (see auction result comparison below) show striking similarities in form, scale, technique, and decoration. Like the present example, both are painted in dark brown over a white-slip ground, with boldly rendered floral sprays arranged in broad registers or shaped panels. Particularly characteristic are the confident brushwork, strongly outlined petals and leaves, extensive use of exposed white ground, and separate floral band around the shoulder. These similarities extend well beyond the general decorative repertoire of the Cizhou kilns and suggest production within a closely related environment and a rather narrow chronological period. Bottom line, the comparisons strongly support a dating of the present jar to the 13th–14th century. China, 1115-1368. Heavily potted with an ovoid body rising from a short, recessed foot, the tapering body is painted in brownish-black on a white slip with two shaped cartouches enclosing leafy flower sprays, below the shoulder with a further leafy blossom, all framed by line borders. Dimensions: Height 22.8 cm With a Japanese wood box. (2) The present vase showcases the adept and unrestrained painting style of Cizhou potters, skillfully capturing the vitality of flowers, reminiscent of a traditional Chinese ink painting. Literature comparison: Compare a related Cizhou vase decorated with peonies, dated to the Yuan dynasty, in the collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, accession number 1987/1.261.
