A RARE SANCAI SPLASHED POTTERY JAR, WAN NIAN, 17TH CENTURY Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by CIRAM Science for Art Cultural Heritage on 1 September 2026, test number 0726-OA-1261J-4, sets the firing date of the one sample taken at 350 +/- 50 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot. Expert’s note The distinctive form of this jar is traditionally known as wan nian (‘myriad years’) and ultimately derives from Tang dynasty funerary vessels. The present jar, however, belongs to the 17th century corpus of the type and was evidently conceived as a decorative object rather than for burial. While deliberately recalling Tang sancai prototypes in both form and technique, its palette is markedly different: the unusually intense emerald green, bright amber, and particularly the freely applied milky-blue splashes create a bold and highly individual effect characteristic of the experimental ceramic production of the mid-17th century. Rather than simply reproducing an ancient model, the potter transformed it into a distinctly contemporary work, combining an archaistic form with the vibrant aesthetic of the Transitional period. Dimensions: Height 18 cm (excl. stand), 23.5 cm (incl. stand) Literature comparison: Compare a closely related earlier sancai-glazed jar with similar milky blue splashes, dated to Tang dynasty, 20.6 cm high, in the Art Institute of Chicago, reference number 1973.633. Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby’s New York, 28 August 2019, lot 690 Mid-Estimate: USD 25,000 or approx. EUR 28,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and sancai splashed glaze, albeit lacking the blue of the present lot. Note the size (19.4 cm) and earlier dating.
