拍品描述

A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA, THAILAND, LOPBURI PERIOD, 12TH-13TH CENTURY Expert’s note The present figure belongs to the Lopburi tradition while remaining strongly indebted to the artistic vocabulary of the Khmer Empire. Particularly remarkable is the exceptionally well-preserved naturally grown patina, distinguished by an unusually rich and complex interplay of mineralization. Warm reddish-brown passages of cuprite alternate with areas of vivid green malachite, and striking blue azurite, creating subtle variations in color and texture across the bronze. Such richly differentiated, naturally developed surfaces are only rarely preserved to this extent, as centuries of handling, cleaning, restoration, or exposure frequently diminish or remove the more delicate corrosion layers. The remarkable survival and complexity of the present patina therefore constitute an important aspect of the figure’s exceptional character. Finely cast standing in samapada, both hands raised in vitarka mudra revealing raised circular emblems on the palms, dressed in a sheer robe that hangs gracefully from his forearms, with a pleated, tapering hem, adorned with a belt and collar, the face with almond-shaped eyes and bow-shaped lips, flanked by elongated earlobes suspending large pendeloque earrings, the hair neatly combed into a high conical chignon. French Export License: Certificat d’exportation pour un bien culturel, nr. 260835, dated 27 May 2026, has been granted. A copy accompanies this lot. Dimensions: Height 33.4 cm (excl. base), 38.7 cm (incl. base) Mounted to an associated modern base. (2) From the Dvaravati period, Lopburi was an active Buddhist center in south-central Thailand and came under the rule of Angkor in the 11th century. The Lopburi style followed the Mahayana Buddhist tradition and displays many stylistic similarities with Cambodian bronzes, in particular bronzes of the Angkor Wat and Bayon style. The physiognomy of these Lopburi images is typified by a human and friendly expression, revealing Thai influence. Literature comparison: Compare a related Lopburi bronze figure of Buddha, 12th-13th century, in the Ramkhamhaeng Museum, Sukhothai.
