A LARGE AND IMPORTANT GILT-LACQUERED WOOD FIGURE OF MULTI-ARMED AVALOKITESHVARA, 17TH-18TH CENTURY Vietnam. Finely carved, the bodhisattva standing tall, the principal hands joined before the chest in anjali mudra, while a further pair is lowered before the body and the remaining twenty arms radiate symmetrically around the figure, their hands held in varied gestures and holding attributes including manuscripts, fruit, and a vessel. Avalokiteshvara is clad in voluminous robes falling in layered folds and billowing outward at the sides, the body adorned with necklaces and further jeweled ornaments. The serene face bears a compassionate expression, with downcast eyes beneath arched brows, a slender nose, and gently smiling lips, flanked by elongated earlobes. The hair is gathered beneath a tall, separately carved crown with an openworked foliate pane centered by a diminutive figure of Buddha Amitabha. Dimensions: Height 68.5 cm (excl. stand), 73 cm (incl. stand) With an associated wood stand. (2) This esoteric form of Avalokiteshvara holds a range of attributes in his twenty-four hands, including manuscripts, fruit, and a vessel. Multi-armed, powerful tantric forms of Avalokiteshvara were introduced into East Asia by the monk Amoghavajra as part of an eighth-century effort to repel Tibet’s military expansion across Central Asia. Later, this protective form of Avalokiteshvara, who is able to aid his numerous devotees with his many arms, became especially popular in Tibet after the north Indian monk Atisha (980-1054) emphasized this tantric deity.
