A BLUE AND WHITE BALUSTER ‘LANDSCAPE’ VASE, KANGXI PERIOD China, 1662-1722. The body set with a short cylindrical neck encircled by a raised rib below the mouth, finely painted in rich and remarkably fresh shades of cobalt blue with a mountainous landscape, depicting craggy rock formations rising beside a meandering stream amid scattered trees and a secluded cottage. The idyllic scene is animated by groups of scholars and literati engaged in conversation and fishing. Particularly notable is the sophisticated modulation of the cobalt washes, ranging from delicate pale tones to deep, inky blue, lending the expansive landscape remarkable depth and expressive quality.
